Spring/Summer Fashion Fix

So it’s another change of season (or so they have been telling us) which means that it’s time to revamp your wardrobe. The change of season is the hardest when it comes to picking out the right outfit, mainly because the days are warm but the nights tend to be cooler. As I have mentioned before layer and layer well….I like scarves because they keep you warm and can go with pretty much anything, for spring look for lighter or brighter shades.

Another great item for the season are flats, always fun, comfortable and versatile, you can’t go wrong with a great pair (me, I splurged on Burberry’s, it was my treat to myself, along with the other items I said were a treat, oops!)…To kick it up a notch this season go for wedges as they are back in a big way….if you’re not a stiletto type of girl then the wedge is a great alternative, think sexy with function.

As with this time of year, white is big as are neutrals….for you ladies that love black (me, me, me) try to lighten up a bit, trust me I know it’s hard but in the dead of summer, having a colour that reflects light instead of attracting it is a good thing.

Short shorts are in for summer but keep these out of the workplace and save them for evenings out and weekends, to dress them up a bit wear your new wedges or some cute flats.

Remember to dress for your body type and not necessarily what the styles are….adjust as necessary and have fun with it….

Keratin Hair Treatment

So ladies, I have what I call crazy hair, it’s wavy, porous (as per my hair dresser) and frizzy. It becomes like Monica’s hair in “Friends” when she was on vacation with the gang in the tropics – I hope you all remember that episode, and if you do that is me in the summer, maybe not that bad, but it’s not good.

I read about Keratin hair treatments in a magazine and I was thinking of doing one except the price I saw in the article was outstanding at around $600 (because of length, time, product etc…), which I’m sorry I can’t justify spending on. In my talks with my hair dresser he mentioned that the price I read was over inflated and said it would be around $350 or so given my hair length etc…So as a treat to myself I thought I would do it.

I have to say I have not been disappointed at all with the results. My hair is so manageable now and I haven’t had a bad hair day since I’ve had the treatment. For me or for any women I think that is a blessing. With that said I have heard and read that this treatment is carcinogenic because it’s synthetic keratin and not the real stuff that your hair naturally produces. If it is cancer causing which I hope it isn’t I am sold.

There are some additional costs which I should mention, the biggest being that you have to buy specific shampoo and conditioner which is pricey but is needed to ensure you don’t ruin the treatment and to make your investment last longer. There is also the time cost in that you have to be at the hair dresser for about 3-4 hours and you can’t get your hair wet (even rain is a no go) for 3 days. I don’t wash my hair everyday but I do wet and condition it regularly so this kind of made me feel gross. There is also a weird smell from the Keratin that is annoying but it’s not totally offensive so if you can get through all this then you’re fine.

The benefits are that you don’t have to buy or put any other products in your hair, which is a savings depending on the products you use. As well there are time benefits as my hair dries a lot faster and the style lasts so I am not having to do my hair every day.

I wouldn’t recommend this treatment for anyone with fine, limp hair but if your hair is crazy and frizzy and totally unmanageable it’s a big buy from me.

Golden Globes

Being the fashion junkie that I am, I love the key awards shows one being the Golden Globes the other being the Oscars. Of course I like knowing if the movies/tv shows etc…that I love are there but my true desire is to see what people are wearing and what we will be seeing in toned down versions in real life. The Globes did not disappoint and it seems most people stepped it up this year.

The colour trends were diverse, think black, nude, greens and red and the styles went from over the top to sleek and stylish. Some of my favourites included Mila Kunis, January Jones, Sophia Vergara and Olivia Wilde. Some of my not so favourites included Halle Berry, Scarlett Johansson and Sandra Bullock. Some people may include Helena Bonham Carter on this list, but she’s quirky and if you’re expecting cookie cutter from her you’re living in a different world.

As for the men the black tie and suits were fine and some of my favourites included Jon Hamm, Mark Wahlberg, Johnny Depp (just because he’s so cool) and Christian Bale because he’s British and his speech was fantastic. As for the men I didn’t like well since they are wearing suits nobody did anything that made me think what the f*ck was he thinking so I’ll say they all pass.

I love the colour black and I’m so glad it was presented in full force as to me it’s always the go to shade. With that said seeing all the green and red on the carpet has now got me thinking that I need to get out there and shop. It’s really not a bad idea considering the spring trends are showing vibrant shades in all hues. After this winter we may need a little colour in our lives so think flashy and long.

Fulton Umbrella Review

As single ladies we know that we need to be prepared for the weather and what it can and may do to our naturally frizzy, wavy hair so when it rains umbrellas are a must. I purchased my Fulton Umbrella on a whim as I wasn’t prepared for a storm and was on my way to night school. I normally don’t shell out $40 on fancy umbrellas as I tend to lose and/or ruin them but on this day I decided to invest in a more costly one to see if it did in fact make a difference.

Well single ladies I concede it does. The Fulton Umbrella I purchased is a mini and flexible model and what this means is that even in the strongest wind it may flip over but it is not supposed to break. In the 6 months I have had this umbrella it has yet to break or distort or be thrown into the garbage (if in writing this article it breaks well karma is a b*tch). Not only is the umbrella cute and small and fits in all my purses (granted my purses are gigantic) it actually works really well.

Fulton Umbrellas are approved by the Queen of England and now single gals has approved it as well.

Sweet dreams are made of these…..

A while ago a friend and I were talking and I mentioned to her that I was having some crazy a*s dreams. They were quite vivid and I remembered them quite clearly when I got up. They were kind of irritating me as I was in constant motion and honestly when I woke up in the morning I felt like I had run a marathon. I know that we dream every night during REM sleep but this dreaming seemed out of whack because if felt like I was never going to get a proper nights rest.

Well she told me something interesting, which I never paid attention to until now. Ladies keep track of your dreams the week leading up to your period. I don’t know if this theory has been scientifically tested or not but from my own research it holds true for me. I think it’s interesting and if this hasn’t been tested, someone should do so and tell me why this happens.

Interviews

There comes a point in your career that you feel I’ve had enough, done enough, taken enough, said enough etc…and you know it’s time to move on from your current position to a hopefully better one. Well ladies and gentlemen I have reached that point, I love the ladies I work with but I just can’t seem to connect on a productive level with my boss and yesterday after our “tête a tête” I said to myself enough is enough and decided to focus my attention on finding a new job.

Luckily for me I applied for a job that a head hunter thought I would be suited for and contacted me via email. I took this email as a sign from a higher power that my decision to move on was being blessed (given the altercation with my boss was that morning), so today I went to meet with the head hunter and as expected I was nervous. When you have to answer questions about yourself and provide examples and pretty much sell yourself it’s hard to be that witty, charming, intelligent, educated person you normally are but thankfully I got through things unscathed.

I do admit that I am not bad in interviews when I feel like I have connected with the person which was the case today. So after the short chat about general items and us knowing someone mutually it appears my tensions eased and I could once again be that great person I was trying to sell. This made things a lot easier because some of my positions on my resume are from 10 years ago and I’m not one to remember what I did yesterday yet alone marketing programs I ran 10 years ago.

Wish me luck in my job search and here’s hoping the interviews get easier.

Sleep

I love my sleep and I think I love it more than most because when I was younger I was an insomniac. I used to lay awake thinking about everything and anything. It was time consuming and quite unproductive because I could think of all the what if’s a million times over but it didn’t change what actually happened. Then one day in my early 20s I said to heck with thinking I am done.

I’m all for analyzing things and thinking, who isn’t? But when it becomes a burden and ruins sleeps then the line needs to be drawn. For me, I just needed to let things go and stop analyzing things from different angles. It isn’t hard and with a little practice you too can shut down your mind.

My trick for getting a good nights sleep is to tell myself to “be quiet” (it’s my mind telling my mind to shut down). I take great pride in the fact that even in the worst of times I can still fall asleep. My sleep maybe altered somewhat as I’m not a machine, but when push comes to shove I know I can shut it down. The power of the mind is great and if you can take control of things you too can stop yourself from over analyzing situations.

This is something I think all single people should know, especially women, we tend to over analyze situations and if there is one lesson I have learned through my many years of dating, it is that men take things at face value and us gals over think them. Now if you think of a way to make money fast, with minimal work, feel free to let me know.

White Boots

Yes I know I’m in the 80’s but I happened across a pair of white boots in a store and not a store that I would ever imagine shopping at, as it is an odd old women’s, lost your sanity, not quite knowing what it is type of store. Anyway I was feeling nostalgic or delirious (the jury is still out) about getting them which I never did because I wasn’t sure if I could wear the boots or whether the boots would be wearing me. For those of you that don’t know the latter is not good.

With your clothes choices you have to remember that you should be wearing the clothes and the clothes should not be wearing you. What I mean by this is that the clothes you wear should make a statement but you are the ultimate statement and your clothes should never overrun you, if they do make new clothes choices.

The easiest way to know that you are the one wearing the clothes and not the reverse, is if you feel comfortable, relaxed, at ease and not fussed about things. If you aren’t feeling these things chances are your clothes are wearing you.

Stress and Addiction

I think it’s interesting to see how people deal with stress. Myself personally I want to smoke, I know it’s awful and disgusting but since I’ve been smoking on and off for so long it’s my go to drug of choice. I know I’ll regret it afterwards but that first drag of a cigarette there is nothing in the world like it. It’s like an instant shot of heroin, not that I’ve ever done this, but it’s what I think heroin addicts feel, bliss and relief.

Speaking of addictions I am strangely drawn to Intervention (on A&E) and Addicted (on TLC). I know why I am, it’s because I am curious as to how people get to certain stages in their lives. I find these shows extremely fascinating, but also truly hard to stomach, especially when I see drug addicts shooting up substances. It’s weird I have no problem with needles for blood donating, going to the doctors, regular immunization shots, but watching people shoot up drugs disturbs me tremendously. I think it’s because I think they might die and I truly don’t want to see that. In my mind I know the producers wouldn’t let that happen but people who are desperate and shooting up make me turn the channel.

I also find the drugs hold on them scary. The thought that you can’t deal with daily life and need to be clouded by a substance to get through has to be the most terrible thing ever. I wonder how did things get so bad and why does it seem (at least to me) that some people get sucked in to drugs and others can be casual users? If I have to choose something to be addicted to I guess in the grand scheme of things cigarettes aren’t so bad, but it’s still an addiction which isn’t a good thing.

Wrong….

I know it’s wrong to judge people but when it comes to clothing I say that sometimes people need a slap a tap or a shake because their choices boggle the mind. Living in Toronto I know it’s hard to dress for the spring weather as things change day by day and even hour by hour, but really when you’re wearing a parka with open toe shoes and no socks that should tell you something.

I want to give you all the best advice you’ve ever gotten on how to dress for spring….layer….it’s really not a new idea, it’s actually my recommendation for all seasons….But more so for spring when you’re getting up to 2C and it’s warming to 18C during the day. All you have to do is take off more clothes to adjust to the temperature that suits you.

Common sense is lacking when people dress for spring. I think everyone should consider the following things: What are you dressing for? What is the weather like and what will it be like during the day? What shoes are you planning to wear? And above all else, is the overall outfit appropriate. It’s really not that hard, it’s quite simple in fact and yes, I like everyone else make mistakes but the one thing I do know is that at least I try.
